Janis Cathey Campbell, lovingly known to her grandchildren as “Gannie,” passed peacefully on August 22, 2024, in Jonesboro. Born on December 27, 1931, she was a radiant soul whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of many.
From a young age, Janis was drawn to music, leading her to an inspiring 60 + year career as a choir member, church musician and piano teacher. Her passion for music was matched only by her love for nurturing the talents of her students. Janis had a unique ability to create an environment filled with joy and encouragement, making her music room a welcoming haven for all. She dedicated herself to her craft while also caring for her family, retiring to support her son, Bruce, and his children.
Janis will be remembered not just for her musical gifts but also for her remarkable personality. She embodied kindness and a welcoming spirit, always making those around her feel at ease. Whether it was through her infectious laughter or her genuine interest in others, Janis had a knack for connecting with people. She was a steadfast friend to all, always appearing where she was needed, bringing a comforting presence to those fortunate enough to know her.
A devoted member of Morrow Presbyterian Church, Janis participated actively alongside her beloved husband, Kenneth Campbell Sr, contributing her voice to the church choir and dedicating her time to the Presbyterian Woman’s Work. Her involvement in the “Young at Heart” church group showcased her desire to build relationships and foster community connections, enriching the lives of her contemporaries with her wisdom and compassion.
Janis had a special gift in the kitchen, making outstanding chili and blueberry salad that would bring warmth to any gathering. She also found joy in bird watching, often stopping to admire the delicate beauty of hummingbirds, a symbol of cherished moments in nature that resonated deeply within her heart.
Janis leaves behind her beloved son, Bruce Campbell, and daughter-in-law, Carol Campbell. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Christopher and Corey Campbell, and Kelsey Dwinnell who carry forward her legacy of love and kindness. Along with her dear sister-in-law, Evelyn Cathey, and six beloved nieces and nephews who were enriched by her wisdom and grace.
Janis now reunites with her deceased family members: her husband of 71 years, her daughter, Dianne Campbell, and her brothers, Dennis and Gene Cathey, who know her spirit has left an indelible mark on all who had the honor of knowing her.
