James Thomas “Tom” Sawyer, Jr.

January 10, 1948 – February 20, 2025

James Thomas Sawyer, Jr. of Rutledge, Georgia a loving father, grandfather, husband, and great friend passed away on February 20, 2025, at Piedmont Hospital in Conyers, Georgia. He was surrounded by the love of his family and friends.

Tom was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia on January 10, 1948 to the parents of the late James Thomas Sawyer, Sr. and Myrtle Glenna Sawyer both of Lawrenceville, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his brother Victor Sawyer.

Tom graduated from Tucker High School. After high school he attended Georgia Tech. This was also during the Vietnam war, on May 1, 1967, he entered the Army. During his time in the Army, he spent eighteen months in Okinawa, reached the rank of E5 Sergeant, and received the National Defense Medal. After Tom was honorably discharged from the Army he joined the Georgia National Guard. He ended his service to his country in August, 1987. After that, Tom worked and retired from Fulton County Sheriff’s department in 911 dispatch.

The greatest joy in Tom’s life was spending time with his beautiful wife, his kids, and grandchildren. Tom is survived by his loving wife Martha Sawyer, son Richard Sawyer, son Glenn Sawyer (Shelley), and daughter Jennifer Greenwald (KC) and several grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at Thomas L. Scroggs funeral directors on March 6, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. The visitation will start at 1:00 p.m.
