Gerald "Jerry" Brazeal

February 28, 1931 — October 15, 2018

Gerald "Jerry" Douglas Brazeal, age 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 15, 2018. He was born on February 28, 1931 in Atlanta, and he was the youngest of five children born to William Waggener Brazeal and Edith North Brazeal. At the age of six, his family moved to Columbus, Georgia where Jerry would eventually attend Jordan Vocational High School. In 1948, at the age of 17, and with few jobs available for young men in the Columbus area; and with his parent's consent, he joined the U. S. Navy and served his country during the Korean Conflict. He served aboard the U.S.S. Columbus and U.S.S. Wisconsin as a Gunners Mate. In 1952, he began his training in the Steamfitter Apprenticeship School and became of member of the Atlanta Plumbers & Steamfitters Local Union 72. He remains a member in good standing with 66 years of membership with Local 72. During his working career, Jerry worked on projects throughout the Atlanta area, such as the new Atlanta Airport, Bankers Fidelity Insurance building, Georgia Baptist Nurses Home, Lockheed-Aircraft Corporation, Southern Railway, Georgia Institute of Technology, Ford Motor Company, the Georgia Governor's Mansion, Piedmont Hospital , as well as Grady Hospital, and the Southern Bell Company. He also worked on Georgia Power's Plant Scherer in Juliette, Georgia. With each of these jobs, he worked his way up from an apprentice to become a Project Manager and Chief of Quality Control, supervising hundreds of men and insuring compliance with contract plans and specifications.

Jerry is predeceased by his mother, father, and four siblings.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Brazeal; two daughters, Debbie (Ken) Harkness of McDonough, GA, and Susan (Chester) Cook of Alpharetta, GA; four grandchildren, Stephanie (Joe) Green of Atlanta, GA,Kevin (Brianne) Cook of Alpharetta, GA, Rebekah Harkness of Asheville, NC, and Collin (Alex) Cook of Brooklyn, NY; and one great granddaughter, Emmy Green of Atlanta, GA, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Jerry's family extends a sincere heartfelt "thank you" to the staff of Johns Creek Senior Living care for the love, care, and support they provided to Jerry over the last four and a half years. Thank you, Elena and Stephanie.

Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, October 18, 2018 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
A Celebration of Life Service for Jerry will be held on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 11:00 0'clock at Thomas L. Scroggs Funeral Home in the Chapel, 6362 South Lee Street, Morrow, Georgia 30260. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to the General Fund at Morrow First United Methodist Church, in the name of Jerry Brazeal, and sent to 5985 Jonesboro Road, Morrow, GA 30260.
