Betty Sue Whittaker grew up in the hills of Granite Falls, NC. She was born to Rosie Ellen Rice and James Cannon on August 2, 1935 during the depression. She did not have an easy life. Betty had to care for her ailing mother at a young age. She drew water from a well carrying it uphill to her home and learned to cook on a wood burning stove. She learned to sew by making doll clothes and darning her families' clothes. She picked cotton for money to go to the movies. The challenges she faced early in life gave her strength and taught her the value of hard work and service. Betty was involved with the church at an early age, and remained faithful to the principles of Christianity throughout her life.
Betty married Doug Whittaker and raised a family with him. She was a stay at home mother while her children were young. Betty was beloved in her community and helped many of her neighbors. She did not have a lot, but what she did have, she shared with others. Her welcoming nature radiated kindness to everyone. Betty cared more about people than material possessions.
Betty was an accomplished seamstress and did alterations for family and friends. She also made beautiful patchwork quilts that she gifted to her loved ones. Gardening was a great passion of hers. She had an amazing garden with her best friend and neighbor Mrs. Flora Mobley. They grew fruits, vegetables, and flowers that were shared with everyone. Betty especially liked her muscadines. She always said she'd prefer have fruit over any candy or dessert. Betty was also an avid reader with an enormous library. Betty loved music, and really enjoyed listening to the soundtracks from Hamilton and Les Miserable. Roger Whittaker was her favorite singer whom she named her youngest son after. She was a fan of Dancing With The Stars and American Idol too.
As a woman of faith, Betty attended Morrow Presbyterian Church for many years where she developed a lot of lasting relationships. She later became a member of Morrow First United Methodist Church and was enriched by the fellowship there.
Betty was predeceased by several beloved family members, including her oldest sons Patrick and Dwight, her husband Douglas Whittaker, sister Virginia Reid, niece Patti Poovey Forbes, and nephew Harold Reid. Betty leaves behind an enduring legacy through her children Ellen and Roger Whittaker. Additionally, she is survived by her sister-in-law Louise Conner, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
