Willie Ray Oswalt

Willie Ray Oswalt, 77, of Lake City, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018 in Jonesboro, Georgia of natural causes. He was born in Columbus, Mississippi on September 20, 1940 to James Festus and Normal Estes Oswalt. Willie had four brothers of which only one survives. He was married to LaWanda Vaughan Oswalt for 51 years. Willie earned a Bachelors and Masters degrees from Mississippi State University as well as a Specialists degree from Atlanta University. He served as a councilman beginning in 1972 and was elected Mayor of Lake City from 1987 to present. Willie also served on the Atlanta Regional Commission for several years. He was a teacher and coach for 40 years. Willie was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Services will be held at First Baptist of Jonesboro on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 11:00 am. Dr. Charles Carter will be officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5pm-8pm. He is survived by wife, LaWanda, daughter, Tamara and son, Carlton, 8 grandchildren, and brother, Terry Oswalt.
