Virlyn Slaton, of Morrow, passed away on July 21, 2015. Services will be held at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Reynolds, Ga on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 11:00am. He will lie in state at 10:30. Bro. Sydney Jones will be officiating. Interment to follow at the church cemetery. The family will be accepting friends at the funeral home, Friday from 5-8pm. Born Maurice Virlyn Slaton into a beloved family home outside of Reynolds, GA. He, his parents, brothers and sister all worked the land. They grew crops and had livestock. His father, besides farming, also drove a school bus,and was politically active as County Commissioner of Macon County, as well as a Mason. Virlyn was married for 57 years to his beautiful and very family oriented wife, Marianne Horton. He served our state and country for 35 years. First, in the Army, then the Georgia National Guard; finally retiring as a Brigadier General. He worked in the Department Of Legislative Council at the State Capital for 34 years and was responsible for shaping many of our laws and conservation projects in the coastal marshlands of Georgia. During this time he worked alongside Governors Sanders, Maddox, Carter, Busbee and Harris. After retiring from state government he started an insurance Trust for the Georgia National Guard and helped charter and start the Georgia National Guard Credit Union. He served his city of Morrow as Chairman of the Planning Commission September 3, 1968 through July 24, 2001 and as Council Member from July 24, 2001 to January 14, 2014. He's lived a life of purpose and touched many lives during his 82 years here on Earth. He has gone to be with his Lord. He will truly be missed. God Bless You, Virlyn. He is survived by his sons, John and Jason Slaton of Morrow; sister, Sandra Klossing(George) of Paris, TN.; brothers, Lester Slaton(Jean) of Reynolds and Gary Slaton of Reynolds; numerous nieces and nephews.
