Elizabeth Bennett Ford passed away peacefully at Emory University Hospital on October 31st from complications of pneumonia and a broken heart. Her husband of sixty years died less than two weeks earlier from complications of Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Elizabeth gave every ounce of herself toward caring for her husband during his difficult illness and had very little strength remaining for her final days. She was born to Robert Lee and Corine Johnson Bennett in Union City, GA, weighing less than three pounds at birth. Although not expected to survive her first night she lived for 84 years becoming the primary source of strength, inspiration, care and love for her husband, six children, and fourteen grandchildren. As a youth, Elizabeth became an active member of Sylvan Hills Baptist Church and continued her service and devotion to her Christian faith throughout her life with Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Forest Park. She worked for Lockheed Corporation to support her husband through veterinary school and established with him Clayton County’s first veterinary practice in Forest Park. All who had the honor of knowing Elizabeth would agree that her greatest love and accomplishment was being a devoted, supportive wife and an exceptional mother to her six children. Services will be held at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, in Forest Park, on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at 2:00 pm. Rev. Spencer Frye and retired minister, Rev. Dr. Bill Hines will be officiating. Interment to follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 4-7 pm. Elizabeth is survived by her six children Don (Linda), Alan (Jill), Gordon (Regina), Suzanne (Mark Whatley), Laura (Keith Turpin), Martin and fourteen grandchildren. Also surviving Elizabeth are her sisters Flora Bennett Cleveland and Carolyn Bennett Chester. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Elizabeth be made to the Philadelphia Presbyterian Church General Fund.
