ROY GRINDSTAFF WWII VETERAN Roy Hubert Grindstaff, age 91 of Conley, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on September 4, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Appalachia, Virginia to the late Okie M. Flanary Grindstaff and Jake W. Grindstaff. Roy was a World War II Veteran serving from 1943-1946 as a Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class for the Navy Amphibious Force He served in North Africa, was wounded in Sicily, and stormed the beach in Normandy. He returned home to marry his sweetheart, and resided in Keokee, VA, and later Conley GA – a suburb of Atlanta. He worked in the Glenbrook coalmine in Harlan KY, then International Bakerage in Lake City GA, and retired from Griffin Industries in Conley GA, Roy was deeply devoted to his family and loved spending time with them and friends. In turn, he was greatly loved and admired. A Christian, Roy enjoyed reading the Bible with his daughters, and going to Church. Roy had a wonderful singing voice, liked playing the harmonica, and enjoyed eating catfish at Captain Billy’s in Stockbridge GA and was an avid Braves fan. He was our hero, and always saluted the American flag wherever he went. Survivors include brother Harry Grindstaff (Juanita) of Big Stone Gap, VA, and sister-in-law Mildred Adams of Appalachia, VA. Children Debbie Harrison (David) of Matthews, NC; Tommy L. Grindstaff (Peggy) of Corryton, TN; and Kim Thompson (Chris) of Lovejoy, GA. Grandchildren John Harrison (Heather) of Chapel HIll, NC; Elizabeth Harrison of San Antonio, TX; Bradley Grindstaff (Becky) of Corryton, TN; Clifford Grindstaff of Albuquerque, NM; Michael Grindstaff (Lauren) of Straw Plains TN; Megan Jones (Jasen) of Corryton, TN; Charlene Grindstaff of Ckaxton, TN; Kyle Thompson (Stephanie) of McDonough, GA; and Joseph Thompson of McDonough, GA. Also surviving are great grandchildren Emilee and Caleb Stooksbury of Claxton, TN; Ava Grindstaff of Albuquerque, NM; Brysen and Masen Jones of Corryton ,TN; Adrian, Marley, Oliver, and Savannah Grindstaff of Straw Plains, TN; and Wyatt Thompson of McDonough, GA. Nieces Jerrie Adams (Don) of Big Stone Gap, VA, Jenny Adams of Appalachia, VA, Diane Woolard of Kernersville, NC, and Jean Meadows of Revelo, KY. He is also survived by many other wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins, though far away in miles, always close in his heart. Roy was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 55 years, Margaret Goff Grindstaff, sisters Helen Courtney of Kingsport, TN and Hazel Begley of Appalachia VA, brother Ralph Grindstaff of London, KY, grandson Arthur Grindstaff of Powell TN, and Paul Harrison of Matthews, N.C. The funeral will be held graveside in the Veteran’s section of Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in College Park, Friday, September 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation Thursday from 5-8pm.
